Winona Ryder Professionally Winona Ryder, was born on Winona Minnesota. Her parents named their daughter after her hometown. Her father Michel Horowitz and her mother Cynthia Palmer were authors and editors. Ryder is a Jew. Ryder believes that her father is from an Jewish family. She is the younger sister of Uria and half-siblings Jubal and Sunyata. Ryder was born in the United States and moved together with her family to Mendocino County California at the age of seven. The family lived in a place without electric power. No televisions were Ryder's only distraction to pass the time. Eventually, she started to become a keen reader. At the age of 12 years old, Ryder enrolled in the American Conservatory Theatre to take acting classes. In 1986, she got her first role on the big screen in the movie Lucas when she was just fifteen years old. Ryder suffered from bullying in high school. Ryder had hoped that her profession as an actress would be a positive change. It didn't work out. But she kept working towards the goals she had set. In 1988, she got her biggest break with Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. Ryder played successful roles in several movies. In 1993 she was nominated two times for Academy Awards. One of the nominations was for her part on the film The Age of Innocence.
